Today's Verse

Luke 14.13-14

Jesus said ‘When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous’.

Living God's welcome

Disciples of Jesus are called to live radically, making a difference in the world. But it often begins very simply, as God’s love begins, with a heart that welcomes all and loves without expecting anything back.

Receiving from Jesus

Jesus encourages his disciples to pray simply and to pray with faith and trust. As they seek God’s daily provision and his reality (see yesterday) their prayers will find an answer.

This week we are invited to reflect about how living close to Jesus helps us to see things and ourselves as they really are. Martha chose to rush around, Mary to sit with Jesus. Mary chose the better option.

Today's Verse

Luke 6.20

Then Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God’.

Happiness

These words of Jesus are tricky! As often, he turns things upside down and challenges the accepted wisdom about life. (Another way of saying ‘blessed’ is truly happy.) It might be he is saying that God comes to those who know they need him.

Today's Verse

Luke 5.27-28

Jesus saw a tax-collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth; and said to him, ‘Follow me’. He got up, left everything, and followed him.

Direction

As Jesus begins his ministry he calls together a rather mixed group of followers, or disciples. None of them more surprising than Levi, also known to us as Matthew. Jesus’ call is simply, “Follow me”.

Freedom to live

Jesus continues to read his ‘manifesto’ in the synagogue at Nazareth. The message that he brings is good news of freedom to all in need, not least those who are often forgotten.

Good News of life

As he begins his public ministry, Jesus returns to his home synagogue in Nazareth and reads from the prophet Isaiah. These words, written centuries before, are like a manifesto for Jesus. He’s come to bring Good News.

Listening to Jesus

Three of Jesus’ disciples witness an extraordinary event on a mountain. Jesus external appearance changes to reflect the wonder and light of his inner reality. Today’s verse records the words they heard. God invites them, and us, to know who Jesus is and to listen to his words.
