Dare to make a difference
While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’

We often meet us Christians but do not recognize the Christ is in our midst. But that does not mean that he is not there. What we believe is is that he is always with us. Live in that knowledge and always have his name on our lips and in our hearts.

Neither was an apostle, but perhaps they were two of the seventy. Maybe they had performed miracles in Jesus’ name, but now began to question their own experience – had it all been real?
We more “ordinary” Christians can sympathise, can’t we? We’ve had some wonderful times with Jesus, almost, like Peter, walking on water, and then, suddenly doubting, beginning to sink.
When the two invited him, Jesus went in to abide with them. When Peter cried out, Jesus saved him. Whatever our doubts and fears, if we ask Jesus he will abide with us, and when we cry out, he will save us.

Easter has provided an opportunity to renew our faith. God is with us always, I believe. Our lives should reflect what He means to us. Give us the courage to see Him in others too, for we are all God’s children, throughout the world. Finally let us remember those who have gone before us.

The image is clear: we should discuss these things amongst ourselves as a community, but until Jesus comes along with us, we have no hope of understanding them. 2,000 years later, is it clear how Jesus can come along with us? Is it through the traditions of our churches, handed down from generation to generation? Is it through the inerrancy of the scriptures? Is it by the indwelling Holy Spirit? Today’s passage says “no” to all of the above. It is in unexpected was that we will not recognise as Christ immediately. Strangers on the road may hold the secrets we seek more than our own friends.

a consistent theme after the resurrection is Jesus presence with his followers and them not recognising him. This complements the Eucharist as his followers remember Jesus ‘as often as they meet’. Where 2 or 3 of us are gathered together in his name Christ is present. Whether we are aware of it or not. And whether or not it suits us! In Matthew’s gospel this ongoing presence is Matthew’s account of the Holy Spirit - the ongoing presence of Jesus: I am with you always.. to the end of the world

Sharing the journey
Thank you for this wonderful way of sharing all our journeys. May we continue to do so, knowing that Christ is always present - when we recognise him and when we do not.
May we be, as in Spiritual Direction, an Anam Cara (Soul Friend) to those with whom we share our journeys and recognise Christ in those who walk with us. And - yes - these encounters may be in surprising places!!
