Week 7: Living the Cross of Jesus

read it•learn it•pray it•do it

Spend a bit of time praying and thinking for yourself about the meaning of these words and how living them might make a difference.

to get you started ...

Faithfulness

In the last week of his life, Jesus’ faithfulness is strongly evident: faithfulness to his friends, to God and to the way of love. In betrayal, in desertion, in trial and in suffering, he remains loyal, true and faithful.

Questions

· What moves you most about Jesus’ faithfulness?
· Is loyalty an ’unpopular’ virtue?
· What does faithfulness mean in your life?

Challenges

· Take time to pause and to thank God for the relationships in your life; pray that you will be able to bring the gift of faithfulness to each one.
· Do something today to renew a friendship that has broken down or faded.

just a little to start with

how this verse works contrary to our expectations - to you who have a little faith, you will have much faith. Jesus mentions this so many times in different guises. He is almost saying, you start with just a little, and i’ll do the rest.

The challenge of humility that leads to faithfulness

It takes heroic humility to be yourself and to be NOBODY but the man ,or the artist ,that God intended you TO BE.You will be made to feel that your honesty is only pride…....But the greatest humility can be learned from the anguish of keeping your balance in such a position of continuing to be yourself without getting tough about it and without asserting your false self against the false selves of others .“The New Seeds of Contemplation Thomas Merton Being the unique self God made us so we can share what gifts he gave us as part of the body for his glory is lifelong balancing act.

True riches

Like the unjust steward in the parable preceding this verse, we too have charge of assets belonging to our Lord.
We hold them tightly, but in Jesus’ eyes all “our” earthly life and wealth is the “very little” that God has entrusted to us for use in his service.  “Very little”, because the “much” is the heavenly life and true riches that God’s children inherit in their own right.  (“…if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ…” (Romans 8:17))
But: “…if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” (v12, NIV).

Faithfulness

Are we faithful in the little things?  “Do the little things….” says St David to his friends, the ordinary things of daily life; do them faithfully, lovingly, with God at the centre. Then maybe the whole of our lives will begin to show that faithfulness, such integration. Jesus was this, throughout. Holy Week seems to highlight His faithfulness, to shine a searing spotlight on it - on the seemingly little things (such as a man carrying a water jar) to Jesus’s ultimate faithfulness on the cross.

God’s love.

God’s love is extended to all, if we trust him. Faithfulness and honesty require trust too. May He strengthen us at all times to follow his example, and in particular when the going is tough.

Be very wary of minor failings

Just as God can bring great things out of our little works of good, so too can the Devil lead us to do great evil if we ignore our little faults.  Be very wary of the ratchet effect which leads us bit by bit away from God.

Encouraging ? ,,, or not ?

Today’s verse is either or encouraging or discouraging depending upon your relationship with God.  Do you experience a God that loves you and welcomes sinners - running towards you with open arms - who equips you for the task ahead; and who therefore encourages you in your faith, however weak that faith may seem at times ? Or do you experience a God who seeks out your faults, where your failure is ever apparent - where you are aware of your dishonesty ?  As kingdom people we shouldn’t hide our faults before God - who can ? - but we should trust, faithfully in the love of God.
