Dare to make a difference
Jesus said, ‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.’

Week 5: Living Close to Jesus
read itlearn itpray itdo it
Spend a bit of time praying and thinking for yourself about the meaning of these words and how living them might make a difference.
to get you started ...
Jesus encourages his disciples to pray simply and to pray with faith and trust. As they seek God’s daily provision and his reality (see yesterday) their prayers will find an answer.
· How do Jesus’ words connect today with your own experience of prayer, answered and ‘unanswered’?
· What does it mean to you, to pray with faith and trust?
· Take time to ‘knock on a door’ with God today?
· Might you do something today to be an answer to someone else’s asking and searching today? A letter? A word? A gift?

Matthew 6:32-33 “….for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” One gift is above all, encompasses all good things, and opens the door to heaven – the gift of the Holy Spirit. Press God for this gift and “….how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? “ (Luke 11:13)

I am a churchwarden at St Mary Magdalene/All Saints Church in Welwyn Garden City. We have been wanting to start a cafe church at All Saints at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon for a while now. We have prayed about this and believe that a new format is what All Saints needs but because our tenants have just left and taken all the chairs with them we don’t have the money to buy 20-30 chairs and a few coffee tables. So I’m knocking on your doors now! Can anyone help us start this project off? Information on anyone else that might be able to help us would be really appreciated.

‘Ask and it will be given to you’. If what you ask is in God’s will then you will receive, if what you ask is not in His plans, then you won’t - nothing lost, but even through not getting something, you get a hint of what God’s plan really is. It changes your direction, your priorities. It’s actually exciting as whatever you think you want and don’t get, God will provide something that is SO much better! From experience I know that sometimes, all God wants us to do is ask. Sometimes, he’s just waiting for us to make the first move. Sometimes I forget to pray, even when I’ve seen the outcomes!

This is mindblowing stuff. I recently had a fairly serious healthscare and this was one of the verses that comforted me.
I kept telling God ‘I believe this stuff and the rest is up to you! There was a peace that truly passed all my understanding! ( and as a healthcare proffesional my knowledge was frightening me!!) Ask , ask , ask but also don’t forget to believe that what we’ve asked for has been granted

Asking is hard. We sometimes feel we cannot ask and we don’t bother to do so. Also we ask for the wrong things and not always in Jesus’ name. But if we ask with due thought and prayer and that can mean we actually admit our need, God does grant us what we need.
Of course this may mean asking friends, neighbours and others for help. We might lose face, feel inadequate and this prevents us asking. But when we have the courage to ask, we get our needs met. But it also means that others will ask us for help too, and our part in God’s kingdom is to respond to those requests of us in turn.

What a wonderful promise this is! We have a heavenly Father who loves us so much that he can answer our every need. Al we have to do is to ask. But in asking much of our heavenly Father we need to remember that our heavenly Father will ask much of us. When our neighbour asks, will we give? when a neighbour is searching, will we help him find or will we allow him to remian lost? when a neighbour knocks at our door (real or metaphorical) will we open it or will it remain closed? The rewards are great but much is asked of us in return.

We do not need to have great faith to start our journey with God. Just a simple knock on the door will do, and God will give us what we need for the journey.

I find sometimes that i dont ask because im afraid this answer will be no. sometimes, id prefer not to have a definite rejection. how thats what goes on between humans. Luckily God works rather differently. In this context, sometimes in praying for the what we might consider unrealistic or ‘not right’ might in begin to reveal the real purpose for us. It’s taking the first step that is tricky.
