Dare to make a difference

Verse for February 27th

Luke 6.45

Jesus said, ‘The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.’

Love and goodness

With somewhat strong and direct language, Jesus gets to the heart of the matter: it’s what in the heart that counts. This determines all we are and all we say.

Questions

  • What do your words say about the sort of person you are?
  • What do you think Jesus means here by ‘good’ and evil’?

Challenges

  • Reflect on what you have learned and acted on in the last week.
  • What could you begin today which will make a lasting difference for good in your community or in the world.

Who is truly evil?

It is a blessing to know that the definition of an evil person is not one who does evil things, but one who loves evil - there is hope for all those who have good in their heart.

A mirror

Seems to me that in this verse Jesus gives us a mirror for our hearts.  If I listen carefully to the words I speak, I’ll get clues to what’s in my heart.

Think on these things

Two verses from the King James Version:
Luke 2:19 “But Mary kept all these things , and pondered them in her heart.
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Communication

It seems to me that whatever means of communication we are using, we should transmit whatever we are saying as if we were talking to the person face to face, for our words carry responsibility.

And not just the mouth

Yesterday I watched a good working relationship fall apart as two colleagues exchanged a series of vitriolic emails; they sit no more than five paces apart! In the days of instant communication we must take Jesus words to heart. When our heart can speak in abundance without the need to face a person, or even to speak to them, that abundance can become a flood, that washes away all good.
And yet it can work the other way the opportunity to respond in kindness and love for a job well done by a person out of sight and sound.
Whatever the communication method from the heart it comes.
